Import your SoapmakingFriend recipes

Paste your SoapmakingFriend recipe links and SoapCalc rebuilds each recipe in your account: oils, percentages, superfat, liquid and batch size, with the lye recalculated.

Bring a whole recipe book over in one go. The SoapCalc importer takes up to 25 SoapmakingFriend recipe links at a time, shows you each recipe before anything is saved, and stores them as private recipes you can scale, cost and make batches from.

Create a free account and import your recipes → Already signed up? Open the importer.

How it works

  1. Copy your recipe links. Open each recipe on soapmakingfriend.com and copy its address, e.g. soapmakingfriend.com/recipes/12345.my-bar.
  2. Paste them into SoapCalc. In My Recipes → Import → SoapmakingFriend, paste up to 25 links, one per line, and press Read recipes.
  3. Check the oil matches. Each oil is matched to the SoapCalc oil library. Rows marked “closest match” or “not found” are highlighted for you to confirm.
  4. Import. The recipes are saved to My Recipes as private formulas, with lye and liquid recalculated from SoapCalc SAP values.

What gets imported

  • Recipe name and notes
  • Oils, fats and waxes with their percentages, matched to the SoapCalc oil library
  • Superfat, lye type (NaOH, KOH or a mix) and KOH purity
  • The liquid setting as you had it: water : lye ratio, lye concentration or water as % of oils
  • Batch size, converted to grams
  • Additives and scents by weight or % of oils; other units are kept in the notes

Lye and liquid are always recalculated with SoapCalc's SAP values. Oils SoapCalc doesn't carry are never dropped silently: the importer stops on them so you can pick the closest SoapCalc oil or remove the line.

Questions

Can I import a private SoapmakingFriend recipe?

Links work for recipes SoapmakingFriend shows to visitors. For a private recipe, open it while signed in to SoapmakingFriend, save the page (File → Save Page As, HTML only) and upload the saved file in the importer. The file is read in your browser and only the recipe itself is sent to SoapCalc.

Is the lye amount copied from SoapmakingFriend?

No. SoapCalc imports the oils, percentages, superfat and liquid setting, then calculates lye and liquid with its own SAP values, the same way it does for recipes you build in SoapCalc.

What happens to additives and fragrance?

Additives and scents given by weight or as a percentage of oils become recipe lines when they match a SoapCalc ingredient. Amounts in teaspoons, tablespoons or millilitres can't be converted to weight reliably, so they are kept in the recipe notes.

Do imported recipes count toward the free plan limit?

No. Imported recipes are stored as private recipes in your account and don't count toward the recipe limit.

Is SoapCalc affiliated with SoapmakingFriend?

No. SoapCalc is an independent soap calculator. The importer only reads recipes you choose to bring into your own account.

Coming from another calculator?

SoapCalc.net exports can be read with the SoapCalc.net importer, and the migration guide covers Soapee and MMS. To start fresh, use the free soap calculator or browse the oil and SAP value library.
